PhD Viva Voce — Common Questions and How to Prepare Step by Step

11 October 2026·6 min·NextGen Team

The viva is not a trick exam. Examiners want to confirm that the research is yours, that you understand it deeply, and that you can defend your choices. Scholars who prepare for the right kinds of questions usually find it far more manageable than they feared.

What the Examiners Are Really Checking

  1. Is the work original and your own?
  2. Do you understand the method — why this and not something else?
  3. Do you know the limitations of your results?
  4. Can you explain your contribution simply?
  5. Do you know the field beyond your own chapters?

Questions You Should Expect

About the research

  1. Why did you choose this topic?
  2. What is the research gap, and how do you know it exists?
  3. What is your main contribution?

About the method

  1. Why did you choose this method over alternatives?
  2. What are the assumptions, and what happens if they fail?
  3. How did you validate your results?

About the results

  1. What are the limitations of your findings?
  2. How do your results compare with existing work?
  3. What would you do differently?

About the future

  1. Where can this research go next?
  2. Is there a practical or industrial application?

A Simple Preparation Plan

  1. Re-read your thesis fully — twice, with notes on weak spots
  2. Make a one-page summary of problem, gap, method, results, and contribution
  3. List every figure and table and be ready to explain each
  4. Review key references — especially the ones your work builds on
  5. Practise a 15–20 minute presentation out loud
  6. Do a mock viva with a colleague or supervisor

On the Day

  1. Answer directly and briefly, then add detail if asked
  2. If you don't know, say so honestly and explain how you would find out
  3. Don't argue; discuss respectfully
  4. Bring a copy of your thesis and your notes, if allowed

Common Viva Mistakes

  1. Memorising instead of understanding
  2. Over-defending a weak point
  3. Not knowing your own figures or equations
  4. Running far over time on the presentation

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a PhD viva voce?

It's the oral defence of your thesis before examiners, where you present your work and answer questions about it.

How long does a PhD viva take?

It varies, but often between one and three hours, depending on your university and examiners.

What happens if I fail the viva?

Outcomes differ by university. Commonly the examiners may ask for corrections, revisions, or a repeat viva, rather than a flat failure.

How should I prepare for tough questions?

Know your assumptions, limitations, and alternatives. Practise answering 'why this method?' and 'what are the weaknesses?' out loud.

Should I memorise my thesis?

No. Understand the logic and key numbers, and be able to explain each chapter in plain language.

Can you help with mock viva and presentation preparation?

Yes — we help with presentation structure, likely questions, and a practice session.
